Great books for ages 4-7
The Cat in the Hat, by Dr. Seuss
This is the first in Theodore Seuss Geisel's (Dr. Seuss's) long legacy of books. It is about two children who's mother has gone away to shop. Suddenly, they are interrupted by a . . . cat in the hat! Soon, he leads them into trouble doing bad things, and before they know it, their mother is coming home.
I like this book for how it is imaginative, and how Seuss carefully provokes the question in the readers mind: What would you do?

The Grinch who Stole Christmas, by Dr. Seuss
_"You’re a vile one Mr. Grinch
You have termites in your smile
You have all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile
Mr. Grinch."
These words pretty much sum up the Grinch, a creature with a heart "two sizes too small". He lives on a mountain overlooking Whoville, Mount Crumpit. He does not understand and is annoyed by the Who's Christmas festivities, so he decides to. . . . steal Christmas! He steals all the Whos' Christmas presents and decorations. But contrary to his belief that it will make Christmas never come, Christmas comes anyway. Suddenly, he realizes that Christmas is more than presents and the like. His heart grows "three sizes bigger", and brings the presents and decorations back down the mountain, and joins in the festivities with the Whos.
I love this story, and it is a story that I encourage all young readers to read.

Horton Hears a Who, by Dr. Seuss
When Horton hears a Who, he immediately becomes friends with all the tiny creatures. Then one day, Horton's neighbors hear about the Whos, and they think that Horton is crazy! They ridicule him and put him in a cage. Will he be saved? If so... how?
Bunny Cakes, by Rosemary Wells
This is a mischievous tale of a bunny brother that will make readers laugh out loud.
Harry the Dirty Dog, by Gene Zion
Harry, a white dog with black spots, liked everything - except getting a bath. One day, when he heard the water running in the tub, he ran away from home. He begins to get dirtier and dirtier. He enjoys getting dirty but there's just one question: Will his family recognize him when he comes back?
I liked this book because of its subtle humor and quirkiness. It is a must-read for 4 and 5 year-olds. They will enjoy the rich graphics - which I enjoyed also - and the simple but interesting way that the story is presented. This is one book that they will ask to read again and again and again.
